The Indian government has implemented stricter traffic regulations effective March 1, 2025, introducing heavier fines and penalties to enhance road safety and deter reckless driving. With road accidents high on the rise,  these amendments are designed to discourage violations and encourage responsible driving.

The revised fines are significantly stricter, including jail time and community service, reinforcing a zero-tolerance stance on traffic violations.

Here are the key updates you need to be aware of regarding the new penalties Effective from March 1, 2025

Traffic Violations Key Penalties

Drunk Driving

A fine of ₹10,000 fine and/or 6 months imprisonment; repeating offenses attract a ₹15,000 fine and 2 years in prison.

Riding Without a Helmet 

₹1,000 fine and a 3-month license suspension.

Triple Riding on two-wheelers

The fine for triple riding has been raised from ₹100 to ₹1,000.

Not wearing a seat belt

The fine is now ₹1,000, which is 10X higher than the previous ₹100.

Using a Mobile While Driving 

₹5,000 fine.

Driving Without a Valid License

Driving without a valid license will now attract a hefty fine of ₹5,000, up from ₹500.

Driving Without Valid Insurance

The fine for driving without insurance has been increased to ₹2,000 with a penalty of three months in prison or community service. Repeat violations lead to a fine of ₹4000.

Pollution Certificate Violations

₹10,000 fine or up to 6 months imprisonment.

Dangerous Driving 

Attract a fine of ₹5,000, up from ₹500

Blocking Emergency Vehicles

Lead to a heavy fine of ₹10,000, increased from ₹1,000

Juvenile Offenses

The fine has been raised from ₹2,500 to ₹25,000. 3 years imprisonment, license cancellation for 1 year, and ineligibility for a new license until age 25.

Racing or Speeding on Public Roads

The penalty for this violation is  ₹5,000.

Overloading

The fine for overloading vehicles has seen a massive jump from ₹2,000 to ₹20,000.

Jumping Traffic Signals

₹5,000 fine, a significant rise from the previous which is ₹500
