WhatsApp has become a go-to platform for online transactions, and soon, the Delhi Traffic Police plans to leverage it by sending automated notifications to traffic violators directly through WhatsApp to deal with the violation and payment process.

As soon as a user clicks on the payment option on WhatsApp, they will be redirected to a payment gateway offering multiple options, including Bhim UPI. This will simplify and streamline the payment process for traffic challans.

Current Scenario of Traffic Challan Payments

Presently, vehicle owners are using Parivahan's e-challan website to make the fine payments. "Many people don't receive SMS notifications for weeks. The new system will help resolve this issue," said another official. Challans will remain with the transport department for at least 60 days, allowing payments through the website. If still not paid, the fines will be forwarded to a virtual court for legal action.

Key Updates on  WhatsApp-Based System for Easy Challan Payment

To make this initiative successful, the department has requested access to the challan database from echallan.parivahan.gov.in, managed by the National Informatics Centre. Once it gets approved, automated messages will be sent with a link to the e-challan website for payment. After a payment is made through the app, users will also receive notifications whenever a new challan is issued.

Besides WhatsApp, the traffic police department is also working on adding other payment options through UPI apps like Google Pay and Bhim. Officials have a strong belief that the new system will boost government revenue, as some people avoid paying fines online or are unaware of outstanding challans. Since WhatsApp has a push message feature, it will act as a reminder for pending challans, just like banks and other services use it for overdue payments," the official said.
